Mushrooms at La Cassinazza
In the intensive agricultural
landscape that formerly defined La Cassinazza before habitat
restoration efforts began, mushrooms were
completely absent.
They remained absent for several years even after the new hedgerows and
woodlots were planted.
We had to wait until autumn 2003 for the sudden, plentiful emergence of
our first mushroom species: Leccinium
duriusculum, which lives in symbiosis with White Poplars.
Numerous other species appeared gradually over the following years,
drawing our attention and stimulating our curiosity about their
identification. We also began building a photographic archives, since
mushrooms are not only pretty subjects, they also have the welcome
quality of immobility and are thus much easier to photograph than birds.
Once again, we do not aim to identify and list all of the species that
have appeared. This is a job for a specialist.
We are quite happy to just keep an image archive, identifying them when
we are able to. We do not try to be complete, but rather want to
illustrate the most conspicuous species of mushrooms we have come
across during our surveys at La Cassinazza.
Below we present the images of the mushroom species we have been able
to identify, albeit with a certain degree of uncertainty.
In a separate page we present the images of unidentified mushrooms,
which we could not put a name to due to our limited experience.
