BIRDS AND BIRDWATCHING

Bird-watching is a bloodless form of hunting.
In this harmless activity, the prey are stored in our memories and knowledge.
They are valuable right where we have observed them.
This is what our new culture must be. (D. Mainardi)

The ongoing habitat resoration efforts at La Cassinazza are a precious opportunity for birdwatchers. As soon as the first efforts got underway, birds rapidly began to recolonise the area.
In the midst of a huge expanse of intensive agriculture, and right at the edge of a large city, the presence of an area rich in food, water, and plants, and most importantly free from disturbance, has been a powerful magnet attracting birds from all around.
A group of keen birdwatchers, on an entirely voluntary basis, has been monitoring the avifauna of La Cassinazza. This activity began in August 2000, with regular surveys taking place at least once a week.
The results have been spectacular: an unexpectedly high number of species have been observed, many of which are quite interesting, including several local and even national rarities.

The birdwatchers' keen efforts have ammassed an invaluable amount of data, which has made it possible to accurately define the phenology of the bird species occurring here. These records are also used to prepare an annual Bird Report.
